Question of Proponent of Westernised Music
When we discuss about the music composers of India, we inadvertently wonder about the real proponent of western music in India. The number one question would be why! Can we not discuss the composer in terms of his or her creativity and versatility. By the way, exploring western music would be the first task of western composers and NOT of Indian composers. Rather, we should ask who of all Indian composers has contributed in terms of confluence of Indian and western music, and has experimented in such experimentation.
If we go back to Indian music history, we would come across two composers Shankar Jaikishan and C Ramachandra had experimented and successfully blended Western music into Indian musical sect. Shankar’s Ajeeb Dastan (from Dil Apana Aur Preet Parayi) and Dilruba … (Rajkumar) emphatically and successfully achieved it in totality before anybody could even attempt. Of course in later years, R D Burman and Bapi Lahiri used western music and popular tunes significantly in 70’s.
